The Government has been carrying out regular inspection and maintenance on the public piers in Hong Kong to safeguard their structural safety. However, the condition of some piers is no longer able to satisfy current needs after being used for years.
Between 2017 and 2019, the Civil Engineering and Development Department (CEDD) conducted the “Study for Pier Improvement at Yung Shue Wan, Shek Tsai Wan, Yi O and Ma Wan Chung – Investigation” (“The Study”). The Study includes carrying out technical study, assessment of potential environmental impact and consultation with relevant stakeholders on Yung Shue Wan Public Pier, Shek Tsai Wan Pier, Yi O Pier and Ma Wan Chung Pier. Preliminary designs were developed for the piers to enhance their structural safety and improve the existing facilities, facilitate the public to visit the attractions and historical heritages located in remoted areas, and meet the basic operational needs of villagers and fishermen relying on vessels access.
In May 2020, CEDD commenced the consultancy contract “Improvement Works at Yung Shue Wan Public Pier, Shek Tsai Wan Pier, Yi O Pier and Ma Wan Chung Pier Design and Construction” (“The Project”), to carry out the detailed design and site investigation works, obtain the authorization of the works under the Foreshore and Sea bed (Reclamations) Ordinance (Chapter 127) for the commencement of the improvement works.
The construction contracts commenced in August and December 2022 respectively.
